Africa’s Largest Sponsored Amateur Golf Event
Nairobi (Kenya) – August 15, 2013 – The 1st Kenya Golf Trophy held last December, attracted leading international brands, which all renewed their sponsorship for this year’s event: Heineken the Title Sponsor, Etihad Airways the official airline, Crown Paints, Multichoice and Nestle. International brands Mercedes Benz, Knight Frank and PepsiCo are joining this year’s long list of sponsors. Premium local companies Nation Media Group as media sponsor, Jacaranda Hotels as official hotel, Uchumi Supermarkets, Safari Park Hotel and Tribe Hotel all reconfirmed their sponsorships, while IT Company CopyCat, NAS Cuisine and NIC Bank are new local sponsors.
Tobs Cohen, the event’s organizer, says: “Without the generous support from the numerous Kenyan and International sponsors, it would not be possible to have an event this size in Kenya. I am overwhelmed by the willingness of top brands and companies to promote the sport of golf and to make this the largest amateur golf event in Africa.”
The tournament will be held at the centrally located Royal Nairobi Golf Club, which celebrated its centenary in 2006. This private membership golf club is the only golf club in Kenya with ”Royal” status. This special signature was granted by King George V in his jubilee year 1935. The list of members of the last 100 years, looks like a history book: ”Who was Who in Kenya”. Well known past Governors, Generals and District Commissioners were all members of Royal Nairobi Golf Club during the colonial days, and offers a great ambiance for the Kenya Golf Trophy. This beautiful parklands golf course is a par 72 and plays 7021 yards for men and 5756 yards for ladies.
The overall winner will take home two tickets to any Etihad Airways destination in the world and his/her name engraved on the floating Chrystal Kenya Golf Trophy. Thanks to the support of the airline, hotel and restaurant industry there are in total more than 30 holidays for the prize winners with a total value of more than US $ 50.000. This includes another 2 tickets to any Etihad Airways destination in the world for the runner-up, a one week stay for 2 in Montecastillo Golf Resort in Spain, 1 week for 2 in Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort in Bulgaria, 3 nights for 2 at Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa in South Africa, 2 nights for 2 at Heritage Kipungani Explorer in Lamu including flights sponsored by Safarilink, among many other sponsored holidays. Lamu Town was named a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2001.
Visiting golfers are welcome for a week long golf experience in Kenya which won IAGTO’s prestigious award for the Best Undiscovered Golf Destination of the year 2009. From US $ 1045 per person sharing a room this package is promoted worldwide, including China, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Nigeria.
The field is expected to have 200 players. The highlight will be the Evening Prize Giving Party, including dance music from Capital Radio’s DJ Michael Waithaka (WDJ), delicious food from NAS Cuisine, Premium Beer from Heineken and Sodas from PepsiCo.
The Junior Golf Foundation, whose mission is to promote junior golf participation and competition for boys and girls from the ages of five to eighteen, will be benefiting from this event as proceeds from a hole-in-one shoot out and auction of handheld TV’s donated by Multichoice will be auctioned.
