Ksh 300.000 for Junior Golf Foundation
Nairobi (Kenya) – October 20, 2014 – The Orange Kenya Golf Trophy, which was held Friday 10 October at Muthaiga Golf Club, generated Ksh 300.000 for the JGF. In the hole-in-one shoot-out at the 13th hole Aman Sodi won for being 5.6ft from the pin winning 2 nights for 2 in the Great Rift Valley Lodge. The hole-in-one shoot-out generated Ksh 50.000/- including donations from well-wishers. Nestle gave a cheque for the same amount, while the auction for four 2 night stays at 4 different lodges generated almost Ksh 200.000/-. With Ksh 300.000/- the 3rd Kenya Golf Trophy has become the largest income source for the JGF.
Tobs Cohen, The Tournament Director, during the prize giving ceremony said: “This will go a long way in promoting golf to juniors. If we want to see a Kenyan playing in the European Tour or in the USPGA, young players are the ones we have to support more than ever before” Golfers from 14 different Kenya Golf Clubs competing for Etihad tickets.
The prize of 2 Etihad Tickets each for the winner and runner-up amongst a total of 30 prizes, with a value of Ksh 3 million, attracted golfers from 14 different Golf Clubs from all over Kenya. Players from Eldoret, Kitale, Kiambu, Limuru, Naivasha, Nandi, Nyali and Nyanza were competing with the members of Home Club Muthaiga and other clubs from Nairobi: Golf Park, Railways, Royal, Railways, Vet Lab and Sigona. The visitors formed half the field and surprisingly took the first 5 prizes.
Dr. Noah Winja of Nyanza Club playing of handicap 9 won the Crystal Kenya Golf Trophy, 2 Etihad Airways tickets to any Etihad Destination in the world and a Heineken Branded Callaway Golf Bag. The Captain of Muthaiga Golf Club, Bhavnish Chandaria, playing of handicap +1, was the best Muthaiga player on 6th place. Bhavnish won 2 nights for 2 at Mission Hills Dongguan and 2 rounds of golf on any of the 12 golf courses in this Guinness Book of Records Golf Resort in China.
Tobs said: “Since players from so many clubs from all over Kenya came to Muthaiga, while even more players had to be disappointed as the field was full, we are contemplating to make the Kenya Golf Trophy a 2 day event in 2015.”
Innovations on and off the course
What has become Africa’s biggest corporate amateur golf tournament the 3rd edition of the Kenya Golf Trophy had 30 sponsors and Ksh 3 million worth of prizes, there were many innovations for Kenya presented during this tournament.
The caddies were wearing white Orange branded overalls, looking very neat and similar to those of the Masters in Augusta. This will be a regular feature at Golf Events organized by Tobs.
A Tented Village with 22 tents where sponsors were promoting their products and services, around a large stretch tent measuring 770 m2, created an excellent ambiance for networking, eating and drinking experiences for the sponsors, players and their guests. Delicious food was sponsored by NAS Cuisine, while drinks were sponsored by Coca Cola, Heineken, Nestle and William Lawson Whisky.
10 of the 18 Holes were sponsored where players were treated with Dasani Water, Ice cream from AIG, Samosas from JCB, Coffee from Nestle and Whisky from William Lawson amongst others.
