AVSEC to Discuss Challenges to Aviation Security

travelindex-hotels-022Geneva (Switzerland) – October 2, 2014 – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that AVSEC World, the leading conference and exhibition devoted to aviation security, will take place 27-29 October in Washington, D.C. The annual event is expected to attract more than 300 delegates in security-related activities at airlines, airports, government agencies, defense and equipment and technology manufacturers.

The recent tragedy involving MH17 has shone a spotlight on the critical role that security plays in protecting air connectivity that drives global commerce and mobility, reunites friends and families and makes the world a better place. AVSEC World provides an opportunity for stakeholders in industry and government to come together to address critical security areas, such as the sharing of information about conflict zones and improving border control and airport processes to facilitate the safe and secure movement of people and goods,said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO, who will speak at the conference.

Under the theme Creating the Future,this year’s AVSEC World will feature a keynote address by Calin Rovinescu, President and CEO of Air Canada and Chairman of the IATA Board of Governors. Cathy L. Lanier, Chief of Police, Metropolitan Police Dept., Washington, D.C., will deliver the opening remarks.

The High Level Panel, moderated by Simon Calder of The Independent, will offer a discussion on the urgent need to share critical information about conflict zones, focusing on mechanisms for information sharing and risk assessments, the responsibilities of State and Industry, and the potential impact on aviation security and facilitation. Participants include:

– John Pistole, Administrator, United States Transportation Security Administration (invited);
– Kevin Burke, President and CEO, Airports Council International North America;
– Jeff Poole, Director General, Civil Air Navigation Services Organization and
– Tony Tyler, IATA Director General and CEO.

Additional topics to be addressed include the growing threat to cyber security; improving airport security, with a focus on the joint IATA-Airports Council International Smart Security initiative; cargo and mail security; and dealing with unruly passengers.
