Phuket Skal Club Reaches Out to Children of Nepal
Phuket (Thailand) – May 29, 2015 – Following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and the global response (the worldwide community donated more than US$14 billion in humanitarian aid), the Skal International Phuket Club, whose members were severely impacted by the tragedy, has often been at the forefront of Skal International Thailand’s efforts to bring humanitarian aid to those caught up in nature’s tumultuous ravages.
Skal International Phuket & South Thailand has responded to an urgent call from UNICEF for the children of Nepal, victims of the massive earthquake earlier this month, and donated THB 100,000.
On behalf of Skal International Phuket & South Thailand, President Claude Sauter mentioned: “Children are always the most vulnerable in these situations. It is a terrifying tragedy and is critical and traumatizing; thousands of kids spent the first few nights in the freezing cold, out on the streets, in open spaces, frightened and terrorized, and we needed to act immediately.”
UNICEF has prepositioned supplies, including water purification tablets, hygiene kits, tarpaulins and nutrition supplies and is working with government and other partners to meet children’s immediate needs in the areas of water and sanitation, clothes, child protection, health and nutrition.
