Y.E. Yang to Captain the Asian Team at The Royal Trophy

hotels-travel-index-030Guangzhou (China) – June 4, 2014 – Asian’s first Major winner Y.E. Yang will captain the Asian Team for the eighth edition of the Royal Trophy to be held on 19-21 December at Dragon Lake Golf Club in Guangzhou, China.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to continue my captaincy of the Asian Team at the Royal Trophy. This is a very special and important competition where the Asian players come together to compete against Europe,” said the Korean star.

“Captaining the Asian Team at the Royal Trophy last year was a great experience, but it was also very painful to lose the match after our team led for the first two and a half days of competition. As I said before, now there is blood in the water and we will do all possible to defeat the Europeans at Dragon Lake Golf Club. This is our mission and we take it very seriously,” added the former PGA Championship winner.

In the previous edition of the Royal Trophy, the Y.E. Yang-captained Asian Team led the matches throughout the series until the back nine holes on the final day of singles matches, when the José María Olazábal-captained Europeans produced a miraculous recovery to secure a narrow 8 ½ – 7 ½ heart-breaking victory over the Asian Team.

“I am looking forward to leading our Asian Team at Dragon Lake Golf Club once again. We know the golf course and we are comfortable with the facilities. This time we will not allow the Europeans top get their hands on the Royal Trophy,” concluded the PGA Tour title winner Y.E. Yang.

The Royal Trophy is the official and traditional competition between the continents of Asia and Europe. Sanctioned by the Japan Golf Tour, the China Golf Association and supported by the OneAsia Tour, the organization features a Players’ Committee comprised of the legendaries Isao Aoki, Sir Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam OBE, Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki, José María Olazábal, Paul McGinley and Jeev Milkha Singh.

In 2006 the late legendary Seve Ballesteros, who captained the Europeans in the two inaugural editions of the tournament, predicted that “the Royal Trophy will grow into one of the world’s great sporting competitions.”

“We congratulate Y.E. Yang in his nomination as Captain for the Asian Team for the eighth edition of the Royal Trophy. This is a significant responsibility and Y.E. Yang certainly has the experience and stature to undertake it. He is very well capable to lead the Asian Team with the utmost competence,” said Andy Yamanaka, the Royal Trophy Chief Tournament Director and Director of the Japan Golf Tour.

“Captain Y.E. Yang led Asia’s best players brilliantly last year, dominating the foursomes, fourball and a number of the singles matches. It is right that he will now have a second opportunity to spearhead the Asian Team to gain stewardship of the prestigious Royal Trophy at Dragon Lake Golf Club,” said Lincoln Venancio, Co-Managing Director of the Royal Trophy.
